Manchester United Football Club

Background

Old Trafford Football Stadium is the largest football club stadium in the UK, with a seated capacity of over 75,000. It has been home to football team Manchester United since 1910 and was recently chosen as one of the host venues for the 2012 Olympics.

Customer Requirements

With such a high concentration of visitors to the stadium during relatively small periods of time, Manchester United needed to ensure the safe, secure and swift ingress and egress of pedestrians and vehicles. The appropriate system would integrate with the existing ticketing system.

APT Skidata Solution

In 2006 APT Skidata installed a stadium wide turnstile access control solution based on the proven Skidata Handshake Logic software, with access control readers to process match tickets and season cards.

Then in 2011, having had the turnstile access control system in operation for 5 years, the club asked APT Skidata if they could provide access control software for the 7000 match day car park spaces. The people and car access control system would be fully integrated, with match day tickets and season cards controlling entry to various car parks. Special hardware and software development work was undertaken by APT Skidata, with the first car park to use this technology in operation later in 2011. Subsequent to the successful operation of this car park, the club deployed the technology solution to the remaining eight car parks.

APT Security Systems Solution

Old Trafford was selected as an official 2012 Olympic venue, with several football matches scheduled to take place at the ground. In order to facilitate these matches a number of upgrades were required in order to protect the stadium from a hostile vehicle borne attack.

Having already been selected to undertake such works at other major Olympic venues, APT Security Systems were selected once again. APT supplied and commissioned APT30AT bollards, the worlds’ shallowest foundation automatic rising telescopic bollards - the only product available on the market place that could meet the site specific requirements.

Result

The APT Skidata system now controls 145 access points and regularly processes capacity crowds. Full integration between the people and car access systems has been achieved making the customers experiences truly seamless.

APT Security Systems installed products that offered the required protection for the duration of the 2012 Olympics.
