LEADING THE CHARGE FOR EV TRANSPORT

Justin Meyer, Business Development Manager for APT Technologies, reports on the recent implementation of a network of EV charging points across Dundee, and the city council's plans for the future.

Dundee has become one of the latest cities to plug in to the electric revolution as, across the country, we see a greater understanding of the advantages of electric vehicle (EV) transport fostering a wider take-up of the technology.

Transport Scotland was one of eight consortiums that bid successfully to join the Government's Plugged-In Places, an initiative which funds commercial and public sector investment in EVs and their requisite infrastructure. As a result of Transport Scotland's participation in the scheme, Dundee City Council was given the opportunity to receive contributory funding towards the cost of EVs and charging points – both for council fleet use and, eventually, wider use by the city's inhabitants and visitors.

Fraser Crichton, Transport Officer at Dundee City Council, says that EV travel seemed ideal for the council's needs: “Dundee does not cover a particularly wide area,” he says, “as a result of which most council vehicles do not exceed around 60 or 70 miles in a day. While they can go further, this is more than sufficient for our needs. The vehicles are only used during the daytime and re-charged overnight, thereby significantly reducing our carbon footprint.”

Naturally, the council's plans required a reliable and easy-to-operate electrical charging infrastructure in place across Dundee to support its new EV fleet. Transport Scotland provided Fraser with a list of nine EV charging point suppliers to tender for the contract, including APT Technologies: “APT stood out from the start because it was the only company that could provide both the standard 7KW charging units and the rapid charger unit,” he says. “The other providers could only supply us one or the other.

“Moreover, we felt that APT's charging technology was more highly developed and better equipped for the future introduction of a payment facility,” he continues. “Other competitor products were not able to support the range of different payment methods that APT's charging posts can, and having all of these options available appealed to us since we have not yet come to a decision about introducing payment. With APT, however, we can keep our options open as we are future-proofed against all eventualities.”

The council has so far installed 12 charging posts in Dundee, including two single outlet wall mounted units at a hospital; two dual outlet wall mounted units at the University; and seven dual outlet charging posts plus a dual outlet rapid charger at four council-owned parking sites across the city: “We felt that rather than the council laying claim to the whole of the grant, other city locations should benefit from the opportunity to introduce EVs and charging infrastructure, so we shared the funding with local public bodies through the Dundee Partnership,” says Fraser.

The council is continuing to work closely with APT and hopes to install a further 24 charging units between now and April, of which at least one will be another rapid charger and a minimum of 14 will be open to members of the public. Potential sites at the moment include Dundee's new V&A Museum and the new Olympic swimming pool, both of which will have new parking facilities.

The council is also looking to expand its EV fleet considerably over the next two years: “We have a new staff travel policy in place for the whole of the council, a vital part of which depends on having a car pool in place that people can use when necessary,” Fraser explains. “This week we have bought another seven EVs, next month we hope to purchase a further 16, and by the end of the year we expect to have a fleet of somewhere between 60-80 EVs.”
